{"id":107,"date":"2015-12-28T15:51:27","date_gmt":"2015-12-28T22:51:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ogbornelaw.com\/?p=107"},"modified":"2023-07-25T16:14:01","modified_gmt":"2023-07-25T16:14:01","slug":"divorces-impact-on-your-kids-the-raw-truth","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/webtechs-designs.com\/2023Ogborne\/divorces-impact-on-your-kids-the-raw-truth\/","title":{"rendered":"Divorce&#8217;s Impact on Your Kids &#8211; The Raw Truth"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There\u2019s no way to pretend that your divorce won\u2019t have a significant and lasting impact on your kids.<\/p>\n<p>You may be worried about support payments and managing the split of tuition fees when it\u2019s time for college but your kids are worried about something more \u2013 whether or not their family will survive the end of their parents\u2019 marriage.<\/p>\n<p>No matter your kids\u2019 ages, they have a hundred questions racing through their heads during this time.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Do I have to pick a favorite parent?<\/p>\n<p>Will I be able to see mommy (or daddy) any time I want to?<\/p>\n<p>Is there something that I can do to make things better?<\/p>\n<p>When will you get back together?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The hardest thing about being a parent is wanting to protect your kids from the pain of divorce but not knowing how to help them.<\/p>\n<p>Our goal (and your goal) should be to help them find healthy ways to channel their upset around your divorce without taking it personally.<\/p>\n<p>Here are simple things to do during this time to help them:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>It\u2019s not their fault<\/strong> \u2013 You know that your divorce isn\u2019t their fault but they don\u2019t. Even older kids, like teenagers, see the world through their own eyes. They\u2019re likely to think there\u2019s something they did that led to the divorce. You need to let them know that you love them and it isn\u2019t their fault.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Be patient<\/strong> \u2013 Your divorce may be a stressful time for you but it\u2019s nothing compared to what your kids are experiencing. They may ask you a lot of questions or the same question over and over again (especially younger children). Be patient with them. Meet their concerns and questions with love.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Listen to their feelings<\/strong> \u2013 Kids will communicate their feelings to you in a hundred different ways. You need to be extra aware of when they\u2019re sharing how they feel with you. Validate their feelings, listen to their concerns, and always remind them that you love them.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Consider working with a professional<\/strong> \u2013 You need to acknowledge that this is a difficult time for you too and that you don\u2019t have all the answers. Consider working with a counselor to help you and your kids deal with the emotional fallout of the divorce. You owe it to them and yourself to give them the best chance of making it through the divorce.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Remember they love your ex-spouse<\/strong> \u2013 Just because your relationship is over doesn\u2019t mean theirs is. Even though you may not love (or even like) your ex, it\u2019s important to keep anger at your ex to your self. It\u2019ll protect your relationship with your kids in the long-term.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It\u2019s easy to lose sight of your kids during the divorce when dealing with your own feelings during the process.<\/p>\n<p>If you are thinking of divorce or are actively planning it, consider a <a href=\"https:\/\/highdesertfamilylawgroup.com\/what-does-a-divorce-cost-in-az\/\">collaborative divorce<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The process is built from the ground up to support you and your family, especially your kids.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There&#8217;s no way to pretend that your divorce won&#8217;t have a significant and lasting impact on your children.
