Too Much Social Media<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>You\u2019re probably thinking right now, \u201cWhat? Social media? How could that contribute to divorce?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As with any addiction, a need to check on social media multiple times a day could be putting a wedge between you and your spouse.<\/p>\n<p>A lack of focus on your family divides you, often without you even realizing it. It\u2019s the small things that will get you. For example: your partner doesn\u2019t appreciate what you share about her on Facebook, or she\u2019s too busy on Instagram to get dinner together some nights.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2_Working_Too_Much\"><\/span>2. Working Too Much<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Many a marriage has been strained from overwork. Late hours spent away from home can lead to a corrosive lack of intimacy between partners. When you\u2019re at the office from sun up to sun down, something has to give\u2014and it\u2019s usually your marriage.<\/p>\n<p>With being at work so much, we usually start to build stronger relationships with coworkers than we do with our own partners. You might find yourself thinking, \u201cHe understands me so much better\u201d or \u201cI love that she gets it when I talk about work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No doubt you\u2019ve heard of the husband running off with his secretary. Yep, it started with working too much.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3_Disrespecting_Each_Other\"><\/span>3. Disrespecting Each Other<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>This one can really sneak up on you without you even realizing it. Often, it\u2019s not a blatant lack of respect; it\u2019s usually subtle.<\/p>\n<p>You nod and smile when she tells you about her day with the kids. She asks you to run through the honey-do list when you\u2019re pushing against a work deadline.<\/p>\n<p>When we aren\u2019t paying attention we forget to channel some love toward our partners. We listen without hearing or we \u201cforget\u201d about what the other person appreciates breeding contempt.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"4_Dishonesty_and_Lying\"><\/span>4. Dishonesty and Lying<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Little white lies may seem harmless in the moment, but they can build on themselves and develop into an outright lie.<\/p>\n<p>It might start by omitting the fact that you stopped by the bar with some friends after work, and the next thing you know, you\u2019re slamming your laptop shut when your spouse enters the room.<\/p>\n<p>Honesty is a requirement for a strong relationship because it is the backbone of trust.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"5_Lacking_%E2%80%9CPresence%E2%80%9D_and_Avoiding_Intimacy\"><\/span>5. When you lack presence in your marriage, you\u2019re there but you\u2019re actually miles away. It\u2019s a bit like being disrespectful, but it\u2019s so much less intentional.<\/p>\n<p>When we\u2019re not there, we miss out on the nuances of the relationship, the way it ebbs and flows in your marriage dance creating resentment.<\/p>\n<p>Which means you don\u2019t want to spend time together. You don\u2019t want to do anything nice for the other person. You certainly don\u2019t want the emotional connection of making love. Before you know it, you\u2019re merely roommates balancing children\u2019s schedules.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Turn_It_Around\"><\/span>Turn It Around<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>If any of these five components ring true for you, there\u2019s definitely hope to turn the ship around. It starts with awareness. If you know it\u2019s happening or you are actively working for it not to happen, you\u2019ll be more engaged.<\/p>\n<p>Talk to your partner. Build in mechanisms to avoid these kinds of situations.
